'Artificial Intelligence – The Other I'

From 7 to 11 September 2017, Linz will host an exciting, comprehensive confrontation with the reality and the vision of artificial intelligence. Symposia, exhibitions, performances, workshops and artistic interventions will elaborate in depth on its cultural, psychological, philosophical and spiritual dimensions. Consideration of the essence of a future artificial intelligence created by human beings will also be the point of departure of a process of reflection about ourselves, our weaknesses and strengths—in short, about what makes us human.

And as the subtitle suggests, we will be focusing our attention beyond the technological and economic horizon to scrutinize cultural, psychological, philosophical and spiritual aspects. From the perspective of a festival dedicated to art, technology and society, Ars Electronica is interested above all in the visions, expectations and fears that we associate with the conception of a future, all-encompassing artificial intelligence. Gerfried Stocker, artistic director of Ars Electronica

In the course of the annual Ars Electronica Festival, there will be a return of last year’s exhibit which was developed in the course of Anouk Wipprechts’s Sparks residency at the Ars Electronica Futurelab: “Agent Unicorn”: a unicorn-shaped wearable to record the brain activity of children who are affected by Asperger Syndrome will be prominently featured in BR41N.IO, a hackathon that is paying tribute to this year’s festival topic of “Artificial Intelligence / The Other I”. There are several predefined projects which are designed to challenge young explorers to design and build a unique, playful and wearable headpiece which is able to measure useful EEG signals in real-time to create any sort of interaction.
